GURPS Conversion

Postby Raven » Thu Jul 12, 2018 8:36 pm

Very simply, GURPS is my all-time favourite tabletop system. Ponyfinder is one of the most interesting tabletop settings I've read about. It seemed apt to combine the two! Here, I will be attempting to do just that. Really, the only things that actually need converting are all the races, lenses for the same, and a few items. To start with, I've managed to pull together the basic 3. Earth Ponies, Unicorns and Pegasi.

Justifications for the traits can be found at the bottom.

Earth Pony [5]

Attribute Modifiers:
ST +2 [12]; HT +1 [10]; DX -1 [-20]
Advantages: Hooves [3]; Enhanced Move (Ground) 1 [20]; Extra Legs (4 Legs) [5]; Improved Magic Resistance 2 [10]; Night Vision 4 [4]; Resistant to Poison & Disease (+3 on HT Rolls) [5]
Perks: Alcohol Tolerance [1]; Fur [1]
Disadvantages: No Fine Manipulators [-30]; Restricted Diet (Herbivore) [-10]; Semi-Upright [-5]
Quirks: Distinctive Feature (Brand) [-1]

Justifications

The reduced price of ST here takes into consideration the -40% to the cost of ST from the trait "No Fine Manipulators". The Enhanced Move is essentially an advantage that represents a much higher maximum speed, as compared to normal movement speed. Many realistic horses in GURPS have this advantage, and the "Down to Earth" Ponyfinder book mentions that Earth Ponies are the runners of the prairies. The "Improved Magic Resistance" is a modified version of Magic Resistance that works much the same, but does not impact friendly spellcasting, nor does it prevent the one possessing it from being a caster.

Unicorn [5]

Attribute Modifiers: IQ +1 [20]; HT +1 [10]; DX -1 [-20]
Advantages: Hooves [3]; Extra Legs (4 Legs) [5]; Night Vision 4 [4]; Sorcerous Empowerment (Visible) 1 [16]; Impaling Striker (Limited Arc: Front; Weak) [2]; Telekinesis (Visible; Cannot Punch; Magical) 4 [10]
Perks: Fur [1]
Disadvantages: No Fine Manipulators [-30]; Restricted Diet (Herbivore) [-10]; Semi-Upright [-5]
Quirks: Distinctive Feature (Brand) [-1]

Justifications

"Sorcerous Empowerment" here is the advantage needed to cast magic. If using the basic magic system, it can easily enough be replaced by Magery 0 and 1, together with a handful of starting spells. The Telekinesis is described separately for the sole reason that in certain magic systems telekinesis-like magic is quite difficult. This is in contrast to the source material, within which we see all unicorns use telekinesis to some degree.

Pegasus [5]

Attribute Modifiers: ST -2 [-20]; DX +1 [12]
Advantages: Acute Vision 1 [2]; Hooves [3]; Extra Legs (4 Legs) [5]; Flight (Winged) [30]; Night Vision 4 [4]; Walk on Air (Clouds) [12]
Perks: Acceleration Tolerance [1]; Fur [1]; Pressure-Tolerant Lungs [1]
Disadvantages: No Fine Manipulators [-30]; Restricted Diet (Herbivore) [-10]; Semi-Upright [-5]
Quirks: Distinctive Feature (Brand) [-1]

Justifications

The reduced cost for DX here includes the -40% modifier to the cost of DX from "No Fine Manipulators". Acute Vision was added because the "Flights of Honor" Ponyfinder book specifically mentions Pegasi having more refined senses, as a way to detect predators. It bears mentioning that Flight in GURPS is much faster than it is in Pathfinder. Pressure-Tolerant Lungs is a trait that in this case allows the pegasus to breathe normally at very high altitudes, where other species might start having problems.

General Justifications

As can be seen, the three templates share a lot of traits. The ones related to morphology are obvious enough, with No Fine Manipulators signifying the lack of hands, the hooves signifying hooves... And so on. The "Semi-Upright" trait, however, bears mentioning in that it represents being most usually comfortable in a quadruped posture, but still having the capacity to stand up on the hind legs in a bipedal posture, if desired. This is, however, quite uncomfortable, and reduces movement speed.
