Phoenix Wolf

Postby David » Tue Aug 27, 2013 2:23 pm

Just did up another race, have a snippet:
In the early days of ponies, some thought themselves the masters of the universe entire. They worked with magic and alchemies that wiser ponies may have shied from, and conjured forth great and terrifying beasts. While most such experiments had sad endings, especially for the beasts conjured, one mad pony left behind a legacy. Conjuring forth several packs of Hell hounds, the mare attempted again and again to burn free the evil that comprised their very being. Of the over thirty hounds, only four survived the experience, but a new race was born.

Phoenix wolves retained a powerful connection to flame and heat, but little was left of their original extraplanar ties, save for their eternal hunger. They do not eat meat or fruit, instead they feast on ash, cinders, coal and other leavings of flames. They prefer burnt plants over burnt animals, but they swear the source creates subtle flavors that are to be savored.

And maybe a feat:

Sun Kiss
The flame within you is unusually powerful, allowing you to exhale potent blasts of heat and flame.
Prerequisite: Phoenix wolf, charisma 13, character level 3
Benefit: You may, once a day, make a breath attack as a supernatural ability. This 30' cone deals 1d6 damage per character level, reflex save for half at a DC of 10 + constitution modifier + 1 per 2 character levels.

Though I must ask, is the 1d6 per character level a good idea, or should it be per two character levels?

Hrm, considering it only fires once per day, and takes a feat... Dragon disciple gets the same power, but builds to multiple times per day.

True, but that's their class power, one of their bonuses for taking that instead of sorcerer or another class. Balancing a class power and a feat don't work well, but, considering it's once a day, it does make sense. Also, just an idea, but why not include a second feet that grants two additional uses per day for your fire breath? It would be a barbarian's best friend, what with their insane con and such.

Though it does require a barbarian not only not dump their charisma, but raise it up to 13.

True, but three points doesn't break builds, not when you get such a powerful ability for it. Maybe a rogue too, though their save would be far lower.

Going by the name, it would be great flavour if they could briefly manifest wings of fire. Obviously have to be a brief, one use power sort of thing for balance reasons, but the though of playing as a flaming, flying wolf is too awesome to pass up on.

It's not 3 points, it's 7. Many barbarians sell their charisma into the pits, for -4 points, instead you have to put it up by 3.

Flying wolves? Madness, hmm...

A level seven feat or so, you could make it like the Alchemist discovery of the name, or the sorcerer bloodline ability, and allow the wings to only last your level in minutes per day, used in one minute increments.
