Item - Spectacles of the Brand

Postby David » Thu Oct 03, 2013 1:20 pm

Eyes are in the top 3 of item slots(I was not expecting that). How does this work for you?

Spectacles of the Brand
Aura Moderate Divination; CL 7th
Slot Eyes; Price 15,000 gp; Weight 1lb each
Description

These spectacles are rimmed with delicate looking mithril and finely carved glass. Besides operating as a masterwork set of glasses, the user can focus on any being with a brand of destiny for three rounds and gain insight into them. Even if the brand is covered, the wearer learns the image presented as well as fleeting glimpses into its purpose, gaining a +2 to sense motive and perception checks against the target. Against a target that once had a brand but no longer does, a DC 30 perception check reveals what it used to be, but gives no further advantages against the target.

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, Arcane Sight; Cost 7,500 gp

Ooh, pretty glasses. But, as resident not-a-bug bugpony, I must rules question:
Dopplegangers: Standard change/Adept Changeling -- does the focus go for the disguised form, or their own, or does that depend on the Disguise check?
Likewise on the Master Changeling, in humanform, is it the DC 30 check as they're not obviously branded there?

I assume the DC30 was put in for those who buck off the call of their Brands, but us sneaky shapeshifters have to ask about it too. >_>

If you're hiding as a human, you don't have any (visible) brand, but that DC 30 check could pull it out, and leave the peerer a bit confused and/or alarmed. A doppel hiding as some other pony would have their true brand revealed, DC 30 check not required.

Nice. :D Would a +2 really make that much difference though? And how could you even roll a DC 30 perception check with a d20?

Well, a lv1 character with wis 16 and perception as a class skill can roll up to 27; 18 and level 2 becomes 29, so you can feasably make dc30s as low as lv3, lv4, without a skill focus feat.

16 WIS - +3 mod. 1 Rank + Class skill, 4 points
20 on the die, +1 for skill rank, +3 for class skill, +3 for wisdom mod (perception is a wisdom skill). 27.
18 is +4 mod, lv2 would provide another rank, so it'd be 20+2+3+4, or 29.

You're supposed to roll 30 or higher, right? 27 plus the 2 would only give you 29.

Yes, but that's why I was saying lv3, lv4 would be realistic to start seeing the DC30 passes.
The Wis16 person would have to hit level 4 without the skill focus feat to be able to hit it; if they took skill focus at lv1, they'd actually be able to try the DC30 at lv 1 (20 +1 (rank) +3 (Class) +3 (score) +3 (Skill Focus) = 30)... the point of a DC30 check is that it'll be a few levels before anyone realistically will be seeing through it.
Lv10 is when people without a + other than skill ranks will start seeing DC30s being passable.

Not that a first level pony should be sporting a 15,000 gp magic item on their nose.
